Mental health and stress relief tips from Marc Jacobs

The 57-year-old fashion designer speaks candidly about self-care and pearls as therapy – and his own struggles with self-acceptance, which led to his latest fragrance, aptly named Perfect.

1. Social media has a Creative impact on my feeling of well-being. I have this urge to express myself, and I feel pretty good letting it out.

2. My definition of a mental health day is prayer and transcendental meditation.

3. I relax by sitting on the couch with the dogs and stroking their ears.

4. My happy place is with my husband and friends, anywhere. Happiness is interior work.

5. On good days I handle rejection by accept it; on a bad day i handle rejection by think about it.

6. The not-so-great coping mechanism that I had to give up was take drugs and alcohol.

7. When I’m pulled in multiple directions, I kind of panic. It kind of bypasses my brain.

8. I pray, meditate, drink juices and vape every day to help me feel grounded.

9. If I am stressed before going to bed, I take melatonin and trazodone; if I wake up stressed, I keep the bed.

ten. When my partner / child / family drives me crazy, I breathe or step back, but I fail very, very often. I tend to fly off the handle.

11. When I was in rehab, focusing on mindfulness and wellness really put it in perspective. They gave us rubber bands that said “Perfect”. And what I got out of that was that I can be true to myself and that my real self is perfect as I am.

12. In my time of need I turn to [my colleague] pseudo [Newbold], and my shrink, Dr Richardson, and [my husband] Charly, and especially the power greater than me, what I call God.

13. My comfort food is Pepperoni Pizza.

14. The song I put on for positive vibes is “I Say a Little Prayer,” by Aretha Franklin.

15. The TV show I watch to de-stress is “Love Island (United Kingdom).”

16. I fight stress by dress and feel good about myself and honor the things I love, my indulgences and my whims.

17. I first realized that I had to take care of my sanity when my father passed away and I went to see a psychiatrist for the first time. Over the past 16 or 20 years, I have learned how [my mental well-being] is.

18. My blanket is my pearls.
