Louis Vuitton joins forces with Marc Newson to revamp the Pégase

The third collaboration between Marc Newson and Louis Vuitton extends to the rolling luggage series

Louis Vuitton’s history has always been defined by innovation in travel. So, it’s no surprise when Maison advanced its rolling luggage series for its third collaboration with Marc Newson. Among the most influential industrial designers of his generation, Newson already collaborated with Louis Vuitton in 2016 to work on the Horizon and Horizon Soft duffels. This time, Newson has reinvented the Rolling luggage series through the Pegasus.
In a way, this new collaborative collection is simply a natural continuation of the already fruitful partnership that Louis Vuitton and Newson began a few years ago. The historic design of Pégase is now reinvented using new materials and techniques that the two creative entities have developed for the Horizon and Horizon Soft ranges. As a result, the three collaborative collections between Louis Vuitton and Newson have a consistent vocabulary and share the same innovations.

The redesign of the iconic Pegasus comes with challenges, especially in relation to the process of creating a new concept, as for the Horizon and the Horizon Soft. As an industrial designer, Newson often works within an existing product typology, but for Pégase he was tasked with evolving a pre-existing offering. So he started by identifying the areas of the current design that defined it – in this case, the pocketed exterior as well as the two- and four-wheel setup – and then worked on how to refine them. Newson’s design was also guided by a brief to create a lightweight case with increased internal volume while retaining the iconic character of the original Pegasus. With all of these challenges in mind, Newson strove to keep the classic design but, at the same time, evolve it through several key details.
For the new Pegasus, Newson has once again applied its materials and engineering expertise. He experimented with aluminum alloys used in the aerospace industry and ultimately came up with tubes of unparalleled quality. slimming. By reducing interior protrusions, internal space is optimized throughout. “That was one of the very first things I wanted to tackle for the interior,” says Newson. “You could say that I approached this product from the inside.” In addition, the trolley system, which is notably surmounted by an ergonomic handle in this design, excels in strength and maneuverability. And in keeping with the spirit of Louis Vuitton, optional packing cubes continue to offer a modular approach to the art of packing. These are, of course, compatible with baggage collection. Another point of difference between the Horizon and the Pegasus, besides the wheels, is the telescopic handle. For both variants of the Horizon luggage, the handle extends across the full width of the case and allows the case frame to extend into the handle. This means that the frame has been placed on the outside, thus making the inside of the suitcase completely flat. The handles of the Pegasus are much narrower and aligned with the back of the suitcase. Somehow the handles appear as if they are part of the shell. The interior, meanwhile, is still flat.

“I think the most appealing thing is the lightness of the luggage and also its resemblance to the iconic Pegasus model. What we have done is make some changes to the historic model by introducing 21st century manufacturing, without sacrificing any character.Historically, Pegasus was not only a bag for leisure, but also for business. The outer zippered pocket was originally designed to hold documents, and more recently, laptops or tablets, which are now essential for any traveler,” Newson explained.
Faithful to the visual language of Louis Vuitton, the Pégase is offered in the timeless Monogram, Monogram Eclipse, Damier Graphite and Taiga Leather. Underneath, the shell ensures Pegasus is both lightweight and ultra-strong. That way, frequent flyers will appreciate that Newson paid equal attention to the exterior and interior of the luggage. As travel for any purpose once again becomes essential and exciting, the Louis Vuitton wheeled luggage collection makes an elevated statement with a design that’s built to last.
